“Should I add my parents as my Facebook friends?” this provoking question will cross every Facebook user’s mind. Facebook, a social network site which has gone viral all over the world recently, has connected people as far as thousands miles away to your neighbors. However, adding parents as Facebook friends still remains a question to be debate to many a people. My opinion? No, I would not add my parents as my Facebook friends due to reasons such as pressure and generation gap.
First and foremost, adding
parents as Facebook friends can cause unnecessary pressure in both parties.
With the exception that you have a very intimate relationship with your
parents, adding parents as Facebook friends will hold your mind when you are
posting comments. This would inevitably defeat the purpose of the social network
site which is to allow people to socialize and distress. For instance, we are
worried about their response towards our photos of us with our close friends of
opposite sex or photos of us in entertainment centre. We are also equally
worried when they post comments directed towards us. Our preference on Facebook
may concern them as well. They may misunderstand when we like videos of pranks
or other dangerous acts.
Generation gap can be another
concern in this matter. Thinking of
different generation may differ in great many aspects, thus parents may
disapprove of our thinking or actions. Champagne shower as a form of
celebration may not be well accepted by parents with traditional thinking. Likewise, we may find it difficult to
understand and accept their thinking. We may not take it well when parents set
a curfew for us. This is a consequent of different generations exposed to
different culture and lifestyle.
In a nutshell, adding parents as
Facebook friends may have many benefits but it also come with many adverse
effects. It depends on the individual’s situation. Interaction with parents should not be done
in the virtual world unless you are miles away from your parents; otherwise
physical interaction can have a better or equivalent outcome, in term of
improving relationship. If your parents insist on doing so, you can have a talk
with them in a positive manner and explain your refusal to comply.
