    DV Project 1A

    Project Scope

Individually, produce 8 sketches with the following theme

    A: Objects (charcoal)
    B: Body Parts/ Figures/ Nature (charcoal)
    C: Details (pencil)
    D: Geometry Projection (artline pen)
    E: Tracing (artline pen)
F: One Point Perspective (artline pen)
    G: Two Point Perspective (pencil)
    H: Artist's Representation (mix media)

    My Artwork

A and B: It is my first time using a charcoal pencil but it is generally similiar to pencil. It is darker and more powdery which makes it harder to control in small areas.

C: The repitition of patterns in the sketches is the essence of the picture. However, it needs to presented in a way that the repitition does not looks boring so a lot details of the shape and contour is emphasized. I have to spent a lot of time just staring at the picture to get the contour right.

D: The geometry in the artwork is actually quite plain so the shadows are very important. Fixing an imaginary light source and figuring the shadows is a good practise to understand the light and shadows around us. It was a bit hard to figure out the right shape at first because this is not how we see thing usually.

E: Tracing was meant to be an exercise to practise our hatching skills and perception of light and shadows on actual subject unlike the geometry in D. The hatching give the picture the texture and contour which make it realistic. I brighten the actual picture with a backlight for me to easier to recognize the boundaries.
F and G: Both artworks need to be a scene in my school (Taylor's University), so I have taken a lot of picture before selecting and drawing. F is done in stippling and G is done in hatching. I used only Artline 0.1 for the stippling but 3 pencils of different shades for hatching. Comparatively, stippling consumed more time.

H: This artwork is a representation of the Colosseum. The right side of the artwork illustrates the section-perspective of the Colosseum's interior and the left segment is the actual Colosseum's exterior. The section-perspective show the structure and light element in the Colosseum and the coloured section of the Colosseum reveals the identity of the architecture.

    Reflection

This project has pushed my drawing to another level that I have never attempted. I poured in a lot of effort to produce what I produced. I have gone to a level of detail that I have never imagined. I realized in the path of architecture, precision and details are important elements. I have to observe the subject carefully and visualize how I want to draw before starting. The details are especially important in this project because all of the artwork are to be presented in black and white. Colours are not visible in the artworks but it can be differentiated by applying different tones and value. A good planning before starting to sketch is a key figure so that I do not waste me time and effort.

Sketching comes in many different ways. In this project, we are supposed to practise sketching in the architectural manner. Before starting, I have to research about architectural sketches. It is all about catching the essence of the subject thus emphasis of the artwork must be well-presented in the most direct yet interesting manner. In most of my art work, the lines lead the viewer's eye direction and eventually lead to the key element of the artwork.
